After seeing the Knights spar in the previous chapter of Under the Oak Tree, Maxi becomes uneasy and leaves. Agnes and Riftan arrive to see if she’s okay and ask if she needs anything. The Knight reveals why Maxi felt uneasy after witnessing the Knights in action.

Riftan cautions Maxi to avoid doing anything that could provoke such negative emotions. Since most young women went to jousting competitions—and since Maxi’s sister was frequently spotted at them—Agnes wonders if Maxi has ever attended one. Agnes never visits the capital because Maxi tells her she is too weak to travel so much.

Agnes invites Maxi to join her and Riftan at future jousting bouts in the Capital, but Riftan declines. Maxi overhears during their conversation that Agnes helped Riftan build roads to increase trade in Anatol in exchange for a cut of the earnings from the sale of monster components.

Maxi was surprised to learn of Agnes’ actions and felt saddened by them, as she, too, yearned to be of service to Riftan and aid him in his Anatol-related undertakings. Maxim recognizes that Riftan will never sincerely accept her assistance, though.
